Work & Play
The beginnings of some work, that is really fun for me
Why Work & Play?
Coming up on 6 months of searching for a full time marketing job, I’ve realized many things about myself, the brands I enjoy, and the clothes I like. I’ve had some free time allowing for brand deep-dives on Instagram and an introduction to second hand shopping on Etsy and The RealReal. One could argue that I should spend my time elsewhere and save more money, but my steal of a Tom Ford era Gucci bag found on Poshmark begs to differ (that is sarcasm though, I’ve got my savings handled).
When it comes to the job hunt, at first, I thought I would be satisfied working at a cool-ISH beauty, fashion, or lifestyle brand (emphasis on ISH). No doubt, I would be happy working at the Gaps and L’Oreals of the world, but I felt a missing element of fulfillment during my search (no shade Gap)… I’ve interned at Goop and Crown Affair with my initial intentions being that I appreciate clean beauty, fun fashion, and the floof of these brands. I recently realized what made them so special to me was the extra layers in branding, taking their platform beyond the product, and introducing their audiences to a new universe. I strive to discover this within brands whether it is in a guest editorial, food collabs, or nice packaging — and at the end of the day, that’s good marketing!
During this time I’ve been working at my favorite store, Our North, introducing myself to smaller, niche brands. I have a huge enjoyment for the search in uncovering lightly touched lifestyle brands (ranging from beauty, fashion, food, and travel), and I want to share those with you. I’ll be looking past overdone brands trying to find what is cute, sharing guides on what works for me, and how we can join in on trends tastefully. I’ll simply include any good recos, so, hey, there might be some Gap featured.
I love the universe of branding, whether it is discovering awesome partnerships, new muses, the perfect white T shirt… or the perfect tiramisu, and I want to share that with my friends/ whoever wants to join in on the conversation. In talking with a spunky career coach, she told me to tell interviewers that this industry is “work and play” to me, and that couldn’t be closer to the truth, so here we are… welcome to my brain, welcome to Work & Play!
